PHILOSOPHY
The key to art is connection.
The piece connects with the artist, and that connection is felt by the viewer.
It might be an immediate connection, one that evokes emotion or wills a reaction.
Conversely, it might be a very gradual connection. The more you consider, the deeper that connection takes root.
It is my hope and passion is that my art connects with people - with friends and strangers. I've never considered myself a great orator, in the traditional sense. Photography is a way for me to speak without speaking, to express in a wordless and very personal way.
I have grown up in the Midwest all of my life, around small suburbs and sprawling farm fields, and believe my work draws from those life experiences.
Looking at my work, I can feel the changing of seasons, smell the shifting weather, sense the wide expanses and cool air, and hear the distant sounds of nature mixing with civilization. The subject matter that draws me is often simple, but striking.
I have less interest in creating beauty in a scene, but rather discovering it. I'm the friend that will tap you on the shoulder and say, "Hey, do you notice how beautifully that light is hitting the edge of the lake?" I want to point out the magic around us, not contrive it.
I truly believe that life is an art museum. People, places, experience, thoughts - all of these can be appreciated and considered on a deeper level. Such is the function of art, imploring us to stop and think, rather than just passing by.
